THE BEGINNINGS OF A MODERN PROFESSION

A Canadian by the name of D.D. Palmer living in Davenport, Iowa in the year 1895 realized a connection of human form and function that would change the future of health care.

A janitor that worked in the building where D.D. Palmer had his office had lost his hearing because of a horse and cart accident 17 years previously. Upon examination, D.D. Palmer noticed a lump in his neck, which had resulted from a misplaced spinal bone. Palmer adjusted the bone back onto its proper place by using his hands. Soon thereafter, the janitor’s hearing was restored and Chiropractic as we know it today was founded.

Actually, restoring spinal bones is an old idea. It has been shown as being employed in Egyptian hieroglyphics where it was used to correct health problems. It was also found in the writings of Hippocrates where he said, “Look well to the spine for the cause of disease”.

What is new is the knowledge that replacing spinal function back to normal affects how the nervous system works. This knowledge allows us to realize the vast potential impact on human health. Taking this into consideration everyone should include chiropractic as part of their lifestyle for their entire family to ensure optimal health and wellness throughout life.

A famous quote by Thomas Edison: “The doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet, and in the cause and prevention of disease.”

Today we see Chiropractic as the fastest growing drug free health care profession in the world. It is presently being practiced in the majority of countries on earth. Doctors of Chiropractic now spend 8 years on average in post secondary education to attain expertise in spinal care.

People are using Chiropractic care in record numbers and it is predicted to build much faster in the next decade. The majority of elite athletes and athletic teams know the value of chiropractic care and have team chiropractors. It is no doubt going to be more widely used by all of society as time progresses.
